Sara Frances Designs Handcrafts a Digital Presence with CDAP

Scott and Shirley created Sara Frances Designs to produce beautiful hand-made bird houses. To grow their business they needed help. CDAP provided the step their business needs to flourish online

Sara Frances Designs is a family-owned business on a mission to share their handmade birdhouses with the world. A Sara Frances Designs birdhouse goes far beyond a traditional birdhouse- each is meticulously hand-crafted with the best cedar and is painted and designed with quality, sustainability and beauty in mind. The houses are constructed with vents to allow air circulation throughout the nesting box, drain holes in the floor to help maintain a dry environment inside, and a hinged access gate for easy annual cleanout.

“Our houses take inspiration from international and regional architecture and culture”, shares Scott. He and his wife Shirley own their business together.  “Our tagline is ‘A Small Escape’ because we believe that our houses create a small escape for both owner and inhabitant.

Scott and Shirley recognized that to take their business to the next level they needed to improve their online store and support these updates with digital marketing strategies. They heard about the Canada Digital Adoption Program (CDAP) and eagerly connected 1-1 with their E-commerce Advisor and learned about the $2,400 microgrant available through the program.

Their dedicated E-Commerce Advisor provided suggestions to improve the Sara Frances Designs website through SEO and digital marketing plans like tailoring their website with keywords and using social media ads to get more customers.

“My advisor was very helpful and worked with me to ensure I was extracting the maximum benefit from the Canadian Digital Adoption (Program). (They) listened to my inquiries and concerns, and provided solid, knowledgeable, and much appreciated, advice and support throughout the process” Scott says.

As part of the program, Sara Frances Designs successfully applied for and received the $2,400 microgrant. “(Our grant advisor) was another incredibly supportive and helpful (person) who provided clarity around choices regarding funding options when I had questions.”

With the microgrant, they upgraded their existing Shopify website enabling Scott and Shirley to access improved customer analytics. Having this data allows them to make more informed decisions tailored to their customers.

“Understanding customer wants/habits and trends can help me position my products and services in a way that extracts maximum benefit for both me and our customers”, shares Scott.

Scott believes CDAP has been an exciting and important part of their business journey.

“As the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu said, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and this is what CDAP has given us, a step in the right direction”, he says. “The whole (CDAP) experience was very satisfying.”

When asked what they would say to other business owners interested in the program, Scott shares:

“A resounding GO FOR IT! Any help small business entrepreneurs can get is worthwhile, but the help that CDAP can provide is worth much more than $2,400.00. …the advisors were professional, knowledgeable, and polite.”
