More and more, they\u2019re looking for ideas and inspiration.<\/p>\n<p>To better understand the changes in how people search, our Ads Research and Insights team has been digging into Google's search data. And to understand what the data is telling them about today's consumer, they're talking to people about the &#8220;why&#8221; behind the data.<\/p>\n<p>I talked to Google\u2019s Ads Research and Insights Group Marketing Manager Sara Kleinberg to discuss some of the findings that her team\u2019s research has turned up. \u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>What\u2019s one thing that has jumped out at you recently?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Sara Kleinberg:<\/strong> People are using search to look for ideas. And by that, I mean they\u2019re actually using the word \u201cideas\u201d in search. A lot. \u201cValentine\u2019s Day ideas,\u201d \u201cBaby shower ideas,\u201d \u201cGroomsman gift ideas.\u201d A lot of occasions and events. And we\u2019re seeing this across nearly all topics: things like \u201ctattoo ideas,\u201d \u201cbathroom remodel ideas,\u201d and &#8220;hair color ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"inline-image inline-image--no-border\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"inline-image__src\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thinkwithgoogle.com\/_qs\/images\/N0YKY7OsQCGbXqeiIGS_oxEuiaU=\/18272\/width-2000\/1140-Ideas-and-Inspiration-02.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, (max-width: 999px) 76vw, (max-width: 1439px) 61vw, (min-width: 1440px) 1000px\" alt=\"1140 Inline 01\" width=\"1600\" height=\"516\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"detail__text\">\n<div class=\"rich-text\">\n<h2>How else is this search for ideas manifesting itself? \u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>People come to search when they know they want something, but don't know exactly where to start or exactly what they need. One way this is manifesting is people are searching for pre-set shopping lists or checklists. They know someone has already gone through the decision making process. So instead of starting from scratch to plan every facet of that upcoming BBQ, for example, they search for a &#8220;BBQ shopping list.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"detail__text\">\n<div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>Another example is to figure out what to wear. It\u2019s kind of crazy. People are searching for outfit ideas. \u201cOutfits for\u201d fill in the blank. \u201cOutfits for school,\u201d \u201ccute outfits,\u201d \u201cinterview outfits,\u201d \u201cmatching outfits for couples.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Or they have a specific need\u2014for instance, they need to buy a gift for their 10-year-old nephew\u2014but haven\u2019t made a purchase like that before or, don\u2019t have kids that age. So we\u2019re seeing searches for things like \u201cgift ideas for a 10 year old.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>So what\u2019s driving this?<\/h2>\n<p>People have a problem they\u2019re trying to solve\u2014they want to look polished at their interview or throw the neighborhood\u2019s best BBQ\u2014and often don\u2019t know where to start. They want to cast a wide net to take in all the information out there so they know they\u2019re not missing out on anything before narrowing down their options.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"detail__text\">\n<div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>People also told us that they\u2019re always on the lookout for things they want or need, always browsing for ideas. It\u2019s fun. Some consider it learning instead of shopping.<\/p>\n<h2>Does this shift have anything to do with more and more search moving to mobile?<\/h2>\n<p>Yes. The always-there nature of mobile enables us to act right in the moment that an idea pops into our heads. So if you see something in the store that you want to learn more about, you can pull out your phone right there. Or if you have a passing thought, you can casually explore the idea right when it comes to mind instead of hoping you still remember what it was by the time you get home.<\/p>\n<h2>What should marketers do with this information?<\/h2>\n<p>By understanding how people are searching for ideas, brands have an opportunity to get into their consideration set. Brands can think of all the open-ended discovery moments where someone is totally open to what is out there and make themselves visible and differentiated. A number of brands are already doing this well. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bedbathandbeyond.com\/store\/registry\/apartmentchecklist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bed Bath & Beyond<\/a> and other retailers have curated shopping lists and checklists that bring people onto their site.
