Struggling with change? There is a lot of discussion among business owners about the modern workplace, and the idea that where and how we work has changed. This change is a result of the realities of the workforce–we’re more diverse in age, as an example–and the role that technology plays in helping us to get our jobs done

Modern workplace

This idea of the modern workplace applies to businesses of all sizes, but it can feel especially daunting for small and mid-sized (SMB) organizations. As someone who spends a lot of time helping SMBs implement technology, I know that change—especially change driven by technology—can be very exciting, but also terrifying.

So, why turn to tech?

A recent survey conducted by Ipsos and commissioned by Microsoft revealed that a whopping 85 percent of Canadian businesses think that technology—specifically tech that makes work easier for employees—is important for creating a successful workplace.

Similarly, 80 percent of small business owners recognize the importance of technology that allows employees to collaborate with each other regardless of their physical location.

Case in point

You have a high-performing employee who needs to move to another city or province for family reasons. Maybe their partner has the job offer of a lifetime or they have a family member who needs care. How do you keep them on your team? You give them tools to work remotely and still stay connected to their team!

A high priority

With so much to gain, no wonder that more than half of SMBs plan to implement a digital workspace that improves business processes—including their digital security. In fact, the same Ipsos study also showed that 78 percent of Canadian SMBs plan on prioritizing security solutions to protect their business against data breaches.

Get used to it

You’re not alone if you get a little—or a lot—uncomfortable about the idea of technological change in the workplace. However, as a small or mid-sized business owner, you need to get used to it. Modernizing your workplace will be critical to your business’ success.

You are not alone

Just know that you don’t have to get through it alone. Never has tech been so easy, especially if you move to the cloud with products such as Microsoft 365 Business. You can empower your team, safeguard your business, and simplify IT management with ONE single solution. And, if you do need help with something, it’s just a click away.

So, lose the anxiety, embrace the change, and see just how flexible and productive a workplace you can create for your teams!
