Guzel, Beautiful Scents Aimed to Provide Comfort

Guzel, meaning beautiful in Turkish. Scents that give you a sense of comfort. That is the message the business owner of Guzel hopes to get across with their candle business. Guzel was launched in March 2021, and sells all-natural and premium soy wax candles that are vegan, cruelty-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free and non-toxic. These handmade candles are infused with blissful fragrances like Jasmine, Clean Cotton, Eucalyptus Spearmint, Rose Bouquet and more.

The motivation behind Guzel originated after hearing all the inspiring stories of small business owners starting from nothing, overcoming challenges, and having successful businesses.

“Guzel was once just a spark in our eye when we heard about all the small businesses coming together during the pandemic.”

It took some time to build the business since Guzel’s owner was starting from scratch. They had to reach out to various suppliers to gather all the materials like waxes, fragrance oils, wicks and jars. Even finalizing the name Guzel for the business took quite a bit of time!

“But we had a goal, and soon enough Guzel was born.”

Initially, the business was primarily accepting orders through Instagram and they soon realized that not only did it require a lot more work, but their products were not able to stand out individually for their unique aspects.

“Our products needed a place that they could call home, and a website was the perfect place.”

Guzel’s owner says that they were overall very impressed with the ShopHERE powered by Google program. Despite it being a free program, they were pleasantly surprised. They were able to receive assistance in building their store and received answers to all of their questions along the way. They really appreciated the support and expertise their eCommerce coordinator provided.

“The process in itself was very quick and smooth. Within a week or so of setting up the online store, it was ready to be launched.”

The website was built to their satisfaction and the colours and product placements were to their liking. They were able to learn how the Shopify platform works and how to manage it on their own once the program was complete. With the website, this business owner is now more conscious of the types of customers their business is attracting and how to reach out to them. They found the analytics for their website to be very helpful in learning what aspects are working well on the site versus what is not.

The owner of Guzel speaks of some of the challenges they face as a small business owner.

“it would be a lie to say that everything is going perfectly. There are days where you get far and then weeks where you get nothing. But that is what makes it inspiring, To stay true to what your business is and go all the way. “

As a small business, you will face many ups and downs along the way, each day will be different from the other and new challenges and opportunities will always arise. It’s all about taking it within stride, and working through everything one step at a time.

When discussing the opportunities that come with building a website, Guzel’s business owner says that since online shopping is becoming a more frequent trend, it brings a lot more visitors to the website. This supports the business when it comes to marketing and sharing content that a large audience can view.
