Ottawa Craftsman Excited To Change The Look Of Sound

Jeff Jenkins, the craftsman behind Beck + Adele has always been passionate about music and audio. His main objective prior to the creation of his business was to change the look of sound. Jeff’s wife, an interior design expert and blogger, insisted that audio equipment should not be made of cheap plastic materials, so he started designing and constructing speakers that sounded great and could be proudly displayed in any home.

Jeff’s journey began more than 7 years ago, when his brother-in-law wanted to be on Tree Hugger, a sustainability blog, so he came to Jeff with the idea of taking old computer speakers and putting them in antique radios. Although it didn’t work out at first, Jeff discovered his love for blending new and old audio. He eventually came up with a speaker design that worked. Through these new creations, Jeff was determined to make his own design. He had an omnidirectional speaker from the 1970s laying around, and from that, a full spec WIFI Bluetooth side table was made. From there it spawned into a few more tables, and then the table top version where Beck + Adele stands today. Along the way, Jeff has learned how professional speakers are built and copied that method over and over until he made a sound that he was happy with. Every speaker is different as he uses solid wood in each speaker, so no two will be the same.

Jeff, his father, and his grandfather are all woodworkers. All Beck + Adele speakers are still handmade on his grandfather's work bench using solid wood and old school build methods. They are built with care, built to last and to look beautiful.

Before joining the ShopHERE Powered by Google Program, Jeff had set up an unsuccessful online store. One of his setbacks was worrying about all of the possible legal implications, as he did not have any knowledge in terms of policies and branding limitations. His Coordinator was able to assist him in establishing the proper policies to protect both himself and his business.. Jeff thoroughly enjoyed the program and found the process painless.

“I was glad for the assistance as you can easily get stuck on one of the steps that might hinder you from going further. Looking back, I enjoyed it and at the same time, learned a bit more about my business and a bunch more about my customer base.”

Being a small business owner in Ottawa, Jeff feels fortunate that he can work out of his home. He started his business during the pandemic as a means to avoid having to deal with overhead or staff. It has given him the time to work out some product complexities and expand on his designs.

The most challenging part is over, and it will be a continual learning process from here for Jeff. He is pleased with the outcome of his online store and is looking forward to continuing to market and see his business grow. Jeff hopes that the trend of supporting small businesses whether online, locally, or in person, continues.

“I am excited for the coming opportunities when the pandemic is over and we get the ball rolling again. In the meantime, I will be in my workshop designing and creating.”
