Small Business Spotlight: Canadian Food Safety Training Inc.
With support from Digital Main Street, Canadian Food Safety Training Inc, transformed their website and online booking system, reducing stress, saving time, and strengthening their digital foundation for future growth.
Canadian Food Safety Training Inc. is a Métis-woman-owned, family-run business committed to making Food Handler Certification accessible for everyone. Recognized by the Ministry of Health as equivalent to all public health units in Ontario, they’ve built their business around community, clarity, and inclusivity — offering their exam in more than 23 languages to meet the diverse needs of learners across the province.
Like many small businesses, the pandemic forced them to rethink everything about how they operated. In 2020, they turned to Digital Main Street to help them transition. As owner Maya Cervantes-Therrien shares, “We had to completely reinvent our business from a fully in-person, 6 days a week drop-in to scheduled online classes. While the world shut down and we had no income stream, (Digital Main Street) was a lifesaver!”
By 2024, the business faced a new digital challenge: their aging website was causing a large portion of customer payments to fail, resulting in a high abandonment rate and hours of manual invoicing. With support from Digital Main Street, they were able to rebuild key components of their website, refresh their booking experience, and dramatically improving their online checkout process. As Maya explains, “The two times we have (worked with Digital Main Street they) have totally revitalized our business… the stress it has alleviated is huge.”
The combination of improved website functionality and increased digital confidence has strengthened their operations and given Maya the tools to manage more of the backend day-to-day. “We've gone from needing a web developer for every little fix in 2020, to me being able to do most little fixes on my own”, Maya shares.
Looking ahead, Canadian Food Safety Training is now focused on boosting SEO and online visibility. With a stronger website and a more reliable checkout system, they’re ready to compete more effectively and continue expanding access to food safety certification across Ontario.
