Small Business Spotlight: MaaWaa Shawarma
MaaWaa Shawarma is blending bold flavours with a stronger digital strategy. With support from the Digital Service Squad, they have improved their online presence and are now building toward future expansion.
For the team behind MaaWaa Shawarma, entrepreneurship started with a shared vision and a passion for bringing bold, global flavours to their community.
Located in Etobicoke, MaaWaa Shawarma was founded by a couple who set out to build something of their own in the food industry. Blending 100% (حلال) Hala Indian, Afghani, and Mediterranean influences, their takeout restaurant quickly became known for its fresh ingredients, halal offerings, and vibrant menu of shawarma, juices, shakes, and smoothies.
As their business began to grow, they recognized the importance of strengthening their digital presence to reach more customers and stay competitive in a fast moving industry.
“We participated in the last program last year, 2025. Participating in the Digital Main Street program helped address several digital challenges our business was facing,” said co-owner Shahzaib Khan. “Before joining the program, we struggled with areas such as establishing a strong online presence, and effectively using digital marketing tools.”
With support from the Digital Service Squad member Jasleen, MaaWaa Shawarma received hands-on support to refine key areas of their digital strategy. From optimizing their Google Business Profile to building and managing social media platforms, each improvement helped create a more seamless and accessible experience for their customers.
“The support and resources provided also helped us streamline our digital operations—for example, improving our search engine visibility,” explained Shahzaib. “These improvements reduced some of the technical barriers we previously faced and made it easier for customers to find and engage with our business online.”
Beyond the technical updates, the experience shifted how they approach digital tools altogether. Instead of simply having platforms in place, they now use them with intention and strategy.
“Participating in the program helped us better understand how important digital adoption is for modern businesses and how the right tools can improve both operations and customer engagement,” they shared.
Today, MaaWaa Shawarma actively uses platforms like Google Business Profile, Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok to connect with customers, share updates, and grow their audience. These efforts have strengthened their visibility, improved communication, and made it easier for customers to discover what they offer.
Looking ahead, the team is focused on both navigating short term challenges and building toward long term growth. While managing rising costs remains a priority, they are also planning to expand their business and open new locations in the future.
“In the long term, we are focused on expanding the business by opening new branches and reaching a wider customer base,” said Shahzaib Khan. “Our digital strategy will play an important role in supporting this growth.”
With a stronger digital foundation in place and a clear vision for what comes next, MaaWaa Shawarma is well positioned to continue growing while staying true to the quality and care that defines their brand.
