Innovative Fine Tea Brand Transcends Beyond Taste
Smell and taste are two human senses that tend to intertwine, therefore aromas can enhance flavours in the food and drinks we consume. This is something that Chaina Fidahoussen knows well as a perfumer, which is a rare profession here in Canada. She is also an avid tea lover, and with these two passions, she decided to create a business called Olfatea. This company provides luxurious teas by combining the art-making of perfumery to create innovative fine tea blends, and is the first of its kind. These fine teas are exclusively scented with botanicals, without any artificial flavouring .With the help of the ShopHERE Powered by Google Program, she turned this original business idea into a reality.
Growing up in Madagascar, an island filled with spices and essential oils, Chaina was surrounded and inspired by different aromas and cuisines. Her curiosity took her to Reunion Island, known for its essential oils and spices, and its biodiversity and gastronomy. Chaina pursued her studies in France to enhance her palate and overall sense of smell. She later moved to Montreal, and eventually settled in Toronto. Her creations and curiosity with both taste and smell led her to create this business. This tea brand is made using artisan perfumery methods, making it a unique way to experience tea. However, building a start-up company is never easy. This was made more difficult due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and like many other small business owners, Chaina required assistance in getting her business up and running. Despite being an independent self-starter and hands-on person, she greatly benefited from her eCommerce Coordinators and the ShopHERE Program at large.
“I greatly benefited from my Coordinators. It has been instrumental for me to get technical support, advice, and ad credits from DMS partners. I am [pleased] to be part of this great adventure!”
Even though she had experience in website building, Chaina wanted more knowledge when it came to online marketing. She enjoyed her eCommerce Coordinator's in-depth knowledge of digital marketing and how it was able to help enhance her website's overall experience.
“I really enjoyed working with Ekua. She has a great knowledge of online marketing, helped her best and went above and beyond to get the store approved by DMS for me to launch [the website] in a couple of days.”
As for any businesses or artists considering joining the ShopHERE Program, Chaina says, “It is a fantastic initiative for local businesses and artists to build their online store and get technical, marketing, and financial assistance. The resources and tools are also [beneficial].”
Next up, Chaina is excited to create a special promotion on her teas for Mother's Day. Her special and unique teas would be the perfect gift for a tea-loving mother who enjoys natural or wellness beverages, or a mother who can appreciate a great fragrance. Digital Main Street was created by the Toronto Association of Business Improvement Areas (TABIA) with direct support from the City of Toronto. DMS is also supported by a group of strategic business partners, including Google, Mastercard, Shopify, Meta, Intuit QuickBooks, Square, Lightspeed, Ebay and Canada Post.
A $42.5-million investment from FedDev Ontario brought together the Toronto Association of Business Improvement Areas, Communitech, Invest Ottawa and the Ontario Business Improvement Area Association to expand the Digital Main Street Platform in order to support more businesses going digital as a response to the impacts of COVID-19 in Southern Ontario.
